We all know that feeling of virtually dragging your feet to get started on an assignment, reading, or study materials. You know you need to get the ball rolling, but just can’t seem to push yourself to get started! While some students swear by it, procrastinating is never a good idea and pushing your tasks until the last minute will only lead to more stress, less thought-out work and likely to poor results. Get moving and working with our must know tips for student motivation. Here are some great strategies for student motivation, whether you need to study for a test, work on math homework or write that final essay!

1. Stay Positive

Staying positive can be tough when you are starting a new topic, or if you get caught up on a difficult problem or assignment. But try your best to think positive! Getting frustrated or making yourself upset over school work will only turn your brain off more. Take a small breather, and think of all the amazing goals you are working towards.

2. Be Involved

Getting involved in your classes and coursework will keep you motivated. In class, sit in the front and ask questions to the professor. For online coursework, utilize the online discussion boards and don’t be afraid to email the professor after the lecture to ask lingering questions.

3. Offer Yourself Incentives

Know what gets you going — is it promising to relax and watch that show you’ve been waiting for after you study? Perhaps study treats and snacks incentivize you while you’re hitting the books. Some people love using exercise as motivation during study breaks. Whatever small incentives you can offer yourself, try to work them into your study routine to keep you at it!

4. Get Creative

Studying in the same manner (same location, same study tricks, etc.) can leave you yawning. Avoid monotony in how you learn and study by switching it up. Try making flashcards, creating games for yourself, drawing pictures or turning facts into songs. 5. Develop Relationships with Peers

Getting to know your classmates can have some serious benefits. One of those is to keep you motivated. Your relationships with your peers can keep you motivated during class, and to set up study groups. Try to keep each other on track with assignment deadlines and textbook readings.

6. Self-Reflect Periodically

Take some time out of your semester for self-reflection on your study habits. Determine your strengths and weaknesses in each class for specific study materials, as well as what part of classes come naturally or are challenging for you. For example, out of textbook readings, assignment deadlines, test scores, or class participation, which do you need to put a bit more effort into and how can you make that happen for the rest of the course?

7. Manage Any Anxiety

Unfortunately, anxiety is extremely common among students today. With increasing pressure to get excellent grades, juggle a social and family life and figure out a way to make ends meet financially, it’s no wonder students are stressed out. There are countless ways to manage student anxiety, you just need to find yours. Your college should have a mental health facility where you can make an appointment with a counselor to find out how to best relieve your anxiety. Reach out to friends and family to create a support group for your stress. Finally, come up with some quick tips that work specifically for you, whether it’s going for a jog, lighting some lavender candles, or journaling, take some time out of your day to de-stress when you feel it most.
